I am a Greek doctor in the UK for the last 17 years or so.
I read many of the stories particularly about doctors and I do feel sad but certainly not surprised.
Any form of fakellaki is wrong legally and ethically and should be punished accordingly. This should not be restricted to the medical profession.
Unfortunately in Greece there seems to be an element of fakellaki "culture". Culture in asking and receiving from the doctors side and culture in giving and not reporting to the authorities from the patients side. Unfortunately culture is a difficult thing to change no matter how much you legislate.
The point is this:
Living and working in the UK for so long, I never dared even thinking of a fakellaki for a very simple reason: I know that my medical career will finish immediately. It may be that the salaries in this country allow for a comfortable living but it is certainly the knowledge that if a patient complains (and complain they will!) the doctor will be send to the General medical Council (GMC) with a good possibility that the doctor will be "struck off" from the medical register if there is proof of the deed (= end of the career) and in the case of a foreign doctor (=start packing to go home).
In other words:
The problem is not the few (or many) "bad apples" in the (any) profession. It is the lack of regulation from the doctors leaders and the lack of any will from the medical profession to retain the trust and confidence of the general public to doctors.
My suggestion to the people who organised this web site:
This is a very good idea and an excellent tool to provide an evidence of the scale of the problem. I would suggest that you send it to the Panellinio Iatriko Sullogo (PIS) +/- minister of Health and ask them what they did about it or what they intend to do in the future.
As for the patients who felt "wronged" in the hands of a doctor (or any public official) and they have some proof: Feel free to report it at the very least to the leadership of the clinic or hospital, the police if necessary and please do not forget the PIS and the politicians. Finally: If you decide to name any person to this website or anywhere else, make sure you have some proof as otherwise you are liable for defamation (this includes the site creators, not just the anonymous bloggers)
